Morning sickness is something very common in pregnancy. It is a very uncomfortable feeling of vomiting and nausea. Morning sickness doesn’t occur only in the morning. It can happen at any time of the day. Fortunately for most people it continues only for the first trimester and disappears later. However, regularly feeling that way can be difficult to deal with. Drinking plenty of water is the first and foremost thing you should do but there are other things you can do along with it to prevent it.
Remember that the natural remedies listed will only work if your condition is not severe. In case you are vomiting right after anything you eat or drink, you should definitely see a doctor. Here are some of the natural ways to beat nausea and vomiting during pregnancy:
- Lemon
Lemon has a calming effect on your body and its smell is quiet refreshing too. You can smell fresh lemon peel to control nausea or just drop few drops of lemon essential oil on a handkerchief and smell it whenever you feel the vomiting sensation. Another way to use lemon is by drinking lemon water. Simply squeeze a lemon in a glass of water and add a little honey to it. Take it the first thing in the morning to prevent vomiting. Sip on it as soon as you feel nauseated or after vomiting.
- Ginger
Ginger is among the best herbal medicines for morning sickness with an additional advantage of reducing acidity in the stomach. Just like lemon, the smell and flavor of ginger can help you ease nausea or vomiting. You can simply chew on a small piece of ginger or drink ginger juice or ginger tea. Simply take one teaspoon of honey and add 5 drops of ginger juice. Take it the first thing in the morning. As an alternative you can take one to two cups of ginger tea in a day.
- Peppermint
Peppermint has a soothing smell and refreshing taste. It contains methanol which produces anesthetic effect to control vomiting during pregnancy. You can simply drop a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a handkerchief and smell it to deal with the vomiting sensation. Chewing on peppermint leaves is also helpful in alleviating vomiting symptoms. Finally, you can prepare pepper tea using dried peppermint and drink it after you wake up in the morning.
- Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is known for its neutral PH which helps to neutralize gastric acid in the stomach. To ease nausea and vomiting, you can simply take a glass of warm water and add three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to it. Have it the first thing in the morning. You can also combine one tablespoon apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey in cold water and take it before you go to sleep.
- Vitamin B6
Did you know taking insufficient amount vitamin B6 during pregnancy also triggers nausea and vomiting? Make sure you eat foods rich in vitamin B6 like avocados, banana, nuts, fish and brown rice. If you can’t ensure vitamin B6 intake through diet, you can also take vitamin B6 supplements during pregnancy. The recommended dose is 25 mg thrice a day. It is best that you consult with your doctor before you begin taking any supplements.
