PCOS is a condition in which many small cysts circulating the ovaries appear. It can cause infertility as it disrupts the menstrual cycle and ovulation, as well an increased risk of diabetes in later life, as the body enters a hyper insulin state.
PCOS is also known to cause hormonal imbalances includinghigher levels of the male hormone androgen which results in hirsutism, the appearance of darker and coarser hair on the face chest and back.
PCOS can occur in any woman, but is often linked to obesity, because as body weight increases, the fat cells convert oestrogen into a weaker type of oestrogen, estriol, resembling male oestrogen.
